Free Machine Embroidery

Free machine (or free motion) embroidery is a way of drawing or painting with the sewing machine, only you move the “paper” (the fabric) instead of the “pencil” (the needle). It’s completely different from most other types of sewing skills, and although you don’t need to be particularly experienced to try it, I don’t think it would suit a complete beginner.

On the day I will show you some examples of different styles, and how to set up your sewing machine. I’ll then demonstrate the basics, and you’ll put some calico in an embroidery hoop and start “drawing” with your needle and thread. Please don’t worry if you’re “not artistic”! I have lots of line drawings for you to trace to use throughout the day.

We’ll cover straight stitch, zig zag stitch, and raw edge appliqué.

After a break for lunch – please bring a packed lunch – you’ll start to work on a framed picture using the new techniques you’ve learned, or you could make one or two greetings cards.
