Sashiko work

Boro and Sashiko stitching originated in Japan and were ways of extending the life of precious garments, and of making them more practical and warmer. There has been a huge interest in both “Boro” and Sashiko stitching in recent years and I thought it was about time I introduced a couple of workshops focused on these techniques. Traditionally, all the stitching would have been done by hand…but I know that for many people, that’s neither appealing nor practical! So, the two projects I’ve devised can be worked completely by machine OR by stitched/embroidered by hand, then assembled by machine.

The Sashiko workshops are A PAIR of workshops, consisting of TWO HALF DAYS. You will make a Sashiko “Kinchaku”for storing precious items (a drawstring bag which also works well as a small basket).

DAY 1:

I will introduce the project and show you  THREE ways of working Sashiko – two by machine and one the traditional way, by hand. You’ll start to sort mark out and stitch the Sashiko panels.

AT HOME:

You will decorate the two panels, either by hand or by machine or – like I did – using a combination of both.

DAY 2:

You will assemble/finish off the “Kinchaku”.

TIMES: Two half days, either 10am – 1pm or 2-5pm. Tea/coffee and biscuits provided.

COST: €50 for the PAIR of workshops.

SEWING MACHINES: Either bring your own or use one of mine.

MATERIALS: You’ll need to bring all the required materials to the workshop. Please contact me for further info about this.
