Spend a holiday in Umbria learning to use a sewing machine, relaxing on the balcony, in the garden, or by the pool and exploring the local area. Spend the morning in the sewing studio, have a leisurely lunch under the shade of a tree, shop in local hill-top towns – and return home revitalised and with a new skill!
This holiday is 7 nights/6 days long, with 4 mornings (each morning approx. 3 hours) – in the studio.
I’m a UK qualified teacher for ages 11-18 and am happy to teach your children too, if you want to bring them along, as long as an adult accompanies them to the classes.
This holiday teaches the basics of using a sewing machine and assumes no (or limited) previous experience.
Techniques covered:
-
- Threading a Sewing Machine
- Sewing straight
- Controlling the speed
- Altering stitch type, width, length
- The importance of correct tension
- General maintenance – oiling, checking and changing a needle
WHAT YOU WILL MAKE – contact me if you’d rather focus on DRESSMAKING, that’s ok – see relevant info on the sub-menu here >:
-
- an infinity scarf
- a small fabric storage basket (with or without handles)
- a tote bag
- a zipped pouch/make-up bag
Below is an example of how your week might be organised:
STUDIO MORNING 1– A morning in the studio learning the basics of using a sewing machine, and making an infinity scarf.
STUDIO MORNING 2– This morning you’ll make a tote bag, similar to the one in the main photo above. It’s lined, and there’s a choice of handle; there might be time to make a little pouch to store it in.
STUDIO MORNING 3 – This morning in the studio you’ll make a fabric storage basket, with boxed corners. We’ll also look at the different stitches such as zig zag and decorative stitches, and how to alter the length/width settings. You might have time to add appliqué, which is a great way of practising using zig zag stitch. .
STUDIO MORNING 4– In the morning, in the studio, you’ll make a zipped pouch which is fully lined and very versatile.
