In this part of Umbria, wherever you look there are olive groves… In the autumn you see people spreading their nets under the trees ready for the harvest, and it sounds as if picking the olives can be quite a sociable event! We have 70 olive trees in a little olive grove behind the garden. It slopes down slightly, and Theo loves playing ball here because he gets to run really fast… Pippa just likes to slowly zig zag down to the bottom and up again…you see this white shape appearing amongst the trees every few minutes. We love the olive grove because it’s just so beautiful – perfect for setting up a couple of deckchairs and eating ice-cream or drinking Prosecco under the shade of an olive tree. I thought you might be interested to see some photos – you can see how tiny the olives are – I’ve never seen olives so small before! We’re very excited at the thought of producing our own olive oil, though we haven’t a clue what we’re doing!! Luckily, once harvested, you take them to a local “frantoia” where the olives are processed…so I guess all we have to do is encourage them to grow!
