Making clothes – the next step

If you’ve made one or two garments already and now want to focus on achieving a better finish or perhaps to use a commercial pattern for the first time, you might like to spend a week here in Italy in my Sewing Studio. Maybe you’re self-taught (muddling through with the help of You Tube). Perhaps you’re someone who “used to sew”, but life got in the way, and you need some help in remembering your skills and boosting your confidence…

This holiday is 7 nights/6 days long, with 4 days in the Studio and 2 days to relax or explore – see What is included?

This holiday assumes some knowledge of – or experience in –  using a sewing machine and some experience of making clothes. However, you are by no means expected to be confident, nor competent, so don’t worry! Email me to discuss!

Techniques covered:

  • using a commercial pattern
  • terminology – basting, staystitch etc.
  • selvedges, bias, warp and weft
  • tailor tacks and other ways of transferring markings
  • achieving a professional finish
  • other techniques depend very much on your pattern choices – we will “discuss” via email before your holiday, to make sure you choose something you like but which allows me to help you develop your skills!

What you’ll make:

  • two products, in most instances, sometimes three. Obviously this depends very much on your choice of garment and your previous experience.

ITINERARY: If you wish to have more free time and less tuition/guided time, that is perfectly fine – the holiday can be adapted to your needs – it’s YOUR holiday…

Below is an example of how your week might be organised:

STUDIO DAY 1 –  On your first day, we’ll start with the basics – together we’ll look at commercial dressmaking patterns and I will make sure you understand the different markings and symbols. We’ll discuss measurements and choosing which size/s to make, and you’ll then retire to your bedroom to take your measurements. In the afternoon, you’ll cut out the paper pattern and then start to cut out your fabric.

STUDIO DAY 2 – You will finish cutting out your fabric, I’ll show you different ways of transferring markings and then you will start to make your garment.

STUDIO DAY 3 – A full day’s sewing where you will make up your garment and also cut out the pattern and fabric for your next product.

STUDIO DAY 4 Today you make up your second garment.
