Creative Feltmaking

Combine a holiday in France with learning how to make your own felted fabric!

Felt is believed to be the oldest type of fabric and unlike woven and knitted fabrics, it is made directly from fibres rather than from yarn. The random structure means it has very different properties from woven or knitted fabric. There are two main forms of feltmaking 1) Wet felting, where the natural lambs wool fibres and colours are blended together and by adding just soapy water and friction you will form a durable piece of material in any design you choose.

2)Needle felting is also fun to learn as you can form 3 dimensional animals with the aid of a special needle.

The Course is aimed at beginners but people with some experience are very welcome too.

For prices see below.

This holiday is 7 nights/6 days long, with 4 days in the Studio and 2 days to relax or explore. It is FULLY catered – see What is included?

This holiday will be run from 10-17th May by Barbara Meek of www.feltworld.co.uk

Minimum numbers of people booked for this holiday to run – contact “Textile Holidays France” for details.

Barbara is a very experienced tutor – I met her when I attended one of her Nuno Felt workshops in Stafford, the year I moved to France and I’ve been wanting to host one of her Feltmaking courses ever since. She is a great tutor – talented, easygoing and fun – and I’m delighted that we’ve finally been able to organise this holiday. I had a fabulous day with her – in fact my husband joined me on the workshop and he thoroughly enjoyed it too! You don’t need any previous Textile experience, and you don’t need to be “artistic” to enjoy this holiday Barbara will guide and support you throughout. She says: “I have a love of all things handmade but most of all, I enjoy sharing my knowledge, whether it be teaching adults, schools, children’s parties or hen parties to groups, I just love to share my skills…. On my workshops/courses you will learn in a relaxed and enjoyable way, with lots of encouragement and support as my groups are small for a reason and you will be amazed at what you can achieve.”

Techniques covered/ what you’ll make:

DAY 1: Wet felted picture with needle felted design
Create a beautiful picture using both the wet felt and needle felt techniques. Bring along your own pictures or be inspired by the beautiful surroundings of Le Jardin du Berger.
DAY 2: Nuno Felted Scarf
Nuno is a wet felting technique that merges loose woollen fibres with a sheer fabric such as silk gauze or a very fine cloth. When felted, the wool shrinks and leaves a beautiful subtle crinkly texture on the silk, unlike any other technique.  This texture and drape lends itself to the beautiful movement required in a scarf and it’s completely unique to you.
DAY 3: Seamless handbag with flap and handle
You will learn 3 dimensional techniques in feltmaking, cutting shapes using a template as a relief so there is no sewing unless you would like to embellish with stitch later.
DAY 4: A flexible day where you an decide on the day whether you would like to make one of the following:
bowl, vessel or a pair of soft felt slippers. Cosy toes slippers will be beautifully fitted to your feet and are guaranteed to keep you lovely and warm, whether you choose to wear them in bed, as slippers or as short socks. They will be hand washable and very durable. Or an original bowl or vessel will look fabulous in any room.
Optional
Needle Felting taster/introduction – An introduction to needle felting techniques, making an animal such as a bird, owl, penguin etc.  (2 hours)
A few comments from people who have attended Barbara’s workshops:

Barbara’s style of teaching was clear, informative and supportive, whilst informal and easy going. Enjoyed every minute!”

Just had a fantastic day with my Mum learning how to make beautiful nuno felted silk scarves. Barbara is very knowledgable and enthusiastic and there was plenty of individual tuition and support as neither of us had felted before. We learned a lot, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the company and came away with 2 stunning individual silk scarves that we will wear with pride!”

Barbara was so accommodating, kind and helpful and really made the day magical.”
