Today I had three complete beginners in the studio for the day. We started by looking at their sewing machines and how to thread them, fill the bobbin, and check the tension seems ok… I then set them off stitching on fabric, seeing how altering the length and width dials affects the stitches. Next came stitching on paper, to see how hard it is to follow a line and change direction.
The first project was a patchwork pincushion, which includes sewing with an accurate seam allowance, securing the stitches, the importance of pressing, to name but 3 crucial skills. These pincushions turned out really well – all very accurately and neatly stitched.
After lunch they learned appliqué, which involves understanding the width/length settings in relation to zig zag stitch, pressing and stitching a double hem, and using fusible interfacing. Three gorgeous tea towels were made!
Last of all, they each made a heart-shaped scented sachet. This seems like such an easy project, but the combination of stitching around small curves, trimming and clipping seams and hand stitching a ribbon for hanging all make it quite challenging – but a great way to end the day!
