The second garment made on last week’s one-to-one dressmaking holiday was this stunning lightweight summer jacket! My “student” chose perfect fabric – two lovely, very fluid, viscose fabrics – one in crushed raspberry, the other in black with a pink hearts print, and the black bias binding pulled the two together beautifully. This was – in many ways – simpler than the first garment she made. However, the fabric is much harder to work with – it moves so much when you’re laying out the pattern pieces, and pinning it together. In fact it needs a LOT of pins – and concentration! – to achieve this level of accuracy. The lower half has a circular flounce, the flounce is finished with a double hem, the shoulder seams are French seams, the front and neck edge are finished with bias binding, and the sleeves end in smart cuffs – so, still a range of new skills learned! I love it – such a practical garment! – I’m going to order the pattern myself…..
