This week I’ve been teaching someone who hasn’t used a sewing machine before. She wanted, in particular, to learn how to do patchwork. We started off with sewing machine basics, and she made a pincushion, with very well-matched squares! Next was an appliqué tea towel – appliqué is often used alongside patchwork, but the reason I include it with beginners is that it is an excellent way of understanding the machine settings, and a brilliant way to gain experience in controlling the machine. The third project was a patchwork cushion, made of gorgeous vibrant, summery colours. I really love the design she came up with.
