This week I’ve had a lady here learning about dressmaking and pattern adapting… She first of all made up a calico toile, to check the fit of a Simplicity tunic pattern. After a few alterations – mainly to the sleeve and shoulder – she made up the pattern in a lovely blue and white Rose and Hubble cotton print. She changed the design slightly, too, having a loop and button fastening at the back instead of the CF slit.
I then explained the basics of pattern drafting, including dart manipulation and adding/creating fulness using darts and shaped seams, and she designed a new style of top from the original pattern. Together we re-drafted it, this time with a CF placket, slightly higher neckline, straighter sleeves and a yoke and inverted pleat at the CB. Made up in another lovely Rose and Hubble int – this time a lovely shade of green with dark roses – it looks lovely!
